The Student Association for Interest and Entertainment for X, better known by its abbreviation SFINX, consists of 266 members studying for a Master of Science in Engineering in Molecular Biotechnology or enrolled in the Master’s programme in Bioinformatics in Uppsala. The association’s board consists of 13 elected positions. Together, we work on a voluntary basis to look after the members’ interests, both regarding the quality of education and the social environment outside the lecture halls. We have four committees that work to further enrich the study experience, ranging from sit-down dinners and sports activities to lunch lectures and study sessions.

SFINX was founded back in 1993 as a student association for students studying biology and biotechnology at Uppsala University’s Faculty of Science and Technology. In the early 2000s, however, the demand grew for people with interdisciplinary expertise in both biology and technology. During this period, Uppsala University was conducting a great deal of cutting-edge research in biotechnology, which was at the forefront of this then relatively new industry.

The Master of Science in Engineering programme in Molecular Biotechnology subsequently grew out of the university’s own need for these competencies. In 2007, Uppsala University decided to launch the programme, and the new students became a natural part of SFINX, which became the foundation of the X chapter. Ever since, students have come and gone, engaging with SFINX to bring the chapter to where it is today.

This is an incredible degree for those of you who love everything. You get a wide variety of subjects such as cell biology, chemistry, programming, physics, mathematics, and more.

What do you like most about studying X?

It’s hard to pick just one thing! One of the best aspects is definitely the wide range of courses we take. We cover everything from programming to mathematics and biology, and I really enjoy that diversity. Plus, the sense of community in the program is incredible , we often socialize across different year groups, which is a lot of fun!

What do you like most about student life in Uppsala?

What makes Uppsala so great is that there’s always something to do. The options range from traditional student dinners and running clubs to game nights and formal balls at Uppsala Castle. Plus, you can join student nations, department associations, or the student union. There’s truly something for every interest, which I really love!

Why did you choose to study X?

I decided to study X after developing a strong interest in biotechnology through a high school research course. I’ve also always been interested in pursuing a career in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sector. The X program was the ideal choice for me, as it combines an engineering foundation with specialized biotechnology coursework.

Student life in Uppsala is truly outstanding, with students making up over a quarter of the city’s population. A central part of student life is the 13 “nations” (student societies), which offer everything from pubs and clubs to sports, choirs, and social activities. Beyond the nations, there is a wide range of student associations and events that make it easy to get involved and meet new people.
